City House Success Story:
James, a student at Centennial High School, enjoyed his classes and had good friends. On the outside, everything seemed fine, yet at home James lived with an abusive and alcoholic father. After ending up in the hospital, James realized he couldn’t live with his father any longer. A friend took James in and helped him get a job. One day, his counselor told James there was a place in Plano that could help him out by giving him a place to live and counseling. James said, “City House changed my direction.”
James became a resident in the Transitional Living Program (TLP), and began pursuing a dream of working in the Coast Guard and becoming a neurosurgeon. He finished his high school studies and did Coast Guard training in Dallas, while also studying and observing surgeries at Medical City – all while at City House.
After James left City House, he moved to Pensacola, Florida, and continued to pursue his goal of joining the Coast Guard. He is currently a reserve in the USCG and working on his Master’s degree in Psychology while working another internship.
He was already on his way to great things, but having to get out of an abusive home almost derailed his dreams. “City House helped me, for sure. There were people I could look up to, people I could trust. It gave me stability, which was the biggest thing. They help you with your career and school. I just wanted to get the most I could out of the program. The life skills classes were great in learning time management and budgeting.”
James would recommend any young adult who needs help to turn to City House.
“I am absolutely grateful for City House. It was an abusive pattern at home and it happened too often. I had to leave because I didn’t feel safe. I felt safe at City House.”
