An Unexpected Outcome from my Chick-fil-A Job

Kester Lee, July 2024

Many high school students turn to restaurants like Chick-fil-A for their first job, often just looking to earn some extra pocket money and pass the time. But for Kester, what started as a simple part-time gig became so much more.

A Simple Start

A little over three years ago, I walked into Chick-fil-A Park with hardly any expectations. I wasn’t serious about becoming a Chick-fil-A team member—just looking for a part-time job to fill some time. Little did I know, that decision would lead me on a path of incredible personal growth, valuable experiences, and unforgettable memories.

Discovering the Heart of Chick-fil-A and Embracing Second Mile Service

From the moment I started, I was thrown into the fast-paced world of Chick-fil-A, learning the ropes of taking orders, bagging meals, and closing the store.

But as I navigated these tasks, I stumbled upon something even more profound—the power of genuine human connection. Being a Chick-fil-A team member pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to engage with strangers and develop essential communication skills. Every interaction boosted my confidence and helped me grow socially.

It wasn’t long before I realized that customer service is the heart of Chick-fil-A.

Watching how my leaders handled tough situations with grace taught me the importance of staying calm and positive in all situations.

Simple gestures like saying “My Pleasure” or helping resolve a customer’s issue became second nature. Sure, handling complaints could be stressful, but watching how our team leaders handled tough situations with grace taught me a lot about staying calm and positive, no matter what.

One of the most transformative lessons I learned was second-mile service.

One of the most transformative lessons I learned was the importance of second-mile service. Not just doing your job but going above and beyond what’s expected—delivering food to guests’ tables, offering refills, or simply striking up friendly conversations, these small acts of kindness can turn someone’s day around. This commitment to making someone’s day a little brighter defined my experience at Chick-fil-A and showed me the true impact of service.

From Team Member to Team Captain

Last year, I had the opportunity to step up as a trainer, sharing the skills and lessons I’d learned with new team members. It was a responsibility I took seriously, and it felt amazing to help others succeed. Then, this year, I was promoted to Team Captain —a milestone that marked how far I’d come since that first day.

As a Team Captain, I was given the chance to guide and support my fellow team members, ensuring our service standards remained top-notch. It was an opportunity that allowed me to leading by example and foster the teamwork that makes Chick-fil-A thrive.

My co-workers were like my second family... Together we formed a diverse and supportive community that I will always cherish.

I couldn’t have made it this far without the support of my amazing coworkers. Their warmth, willingness to help, and sense of camaraderie created a work environment that felt more like a second family. Together, we formed a diverse and supportive community that I will always cherish.

Looking to the future

As I prepare to head back to Texas A&M University this fall, I’m taking with me not just the lessons I’ve learned, but also the confidence and leadership skills I’ve gained from my time at Chick-fil-A. What started as just a job turned into a place of growth, learning, and countless unforgettable memories.

Thank you, Josh, my team leaders, and all my wonderful coworkers, for making my time here so memorable and for welcoming me into the Chick-fil-A family!
